Music has always been a guiding force in Samara’s family. Her grandparents led the Philadelphia gospel group The Savettes, and her father toured with singer Andrae Crouch. Although her early influences were gospel and R&B, Samara discovered jazz while attending Fordham High School for the Arts, where she performed regularly with a jazz band.
Samara Joy was 22 when she was recognised as the new benchmark in vocal jazz and acclaimed by critics for her ‘custard-sweet’ tone (The New York Times) and ‘sweet, haunting’ singing (NPR Fresh Air). She has built a loyal following on TikTok and knows how to win over die-hard fans. In Linger Awhile, released in 2022, Samara updates jazz standards with a modern twist. The album not only showcases her timeless voice and musical wisdom, but also introduces this fundamental popular music to a new audience. With ‘Portrait’, released in 2024, Samara offers a glimpse of her evolution, not only as a singer of a generation, but also as a songwriter, arranger and band leader.
